When we first started Crybaby Records back in May 2015 we thought we understood the music industry. We entered the music scene with an army of college interns and hit the ground running: signing bands, booking shows, shooting music videos, building our own recording studio and working directly with artists to understand what they need.
During this time, we got a chance to work with Philly's most talented musicians, graphic designers and photographers. We shot over 100 videos and gave a bunch of interviews. We worked with over 80 local venues across the Greater Philadelphia Area (including a few in NYC and Baltimore). And we made a ton of friends in the process.
However, it didn't take long for us to realize some of the biggest issues plaguing the local music scene. Artists consistently undervaluing their music, often giving away full albums for free just for a chance to be heard in a crowded music scene. A toxic 'do-it-yourself' attitude of looking for free alternatives to hiring professionals that left talented musicians with low-quality recordings and promotional material. And worst of all, a huge lack of support from the general public, resulting in the lowest local show turnouts in the history of the music scene and the closing of at least two well-known Philly venues (Dobbs and Northstar Bar) just last summer.
Our mission has always been to help the local music industry overcome these barriers, and over the next few months we have some big releases planned that we hope will make achieving success in the music industry easier for everyone who pours their heart into it. We're fighting for the musicians, the graphic designers, the photographers, the journalists, the venue owners and anyone who wakes up everyday to make the world more amazing through music and art.
Of course, as a small record label trying to change the entire music industry, we can't do it alone. We need your support. So whenever you have a minute, check out our social profiles and throw us a like, leave us a message on here with any feedback/suggestions/criticism and check back here periodically for more updates. As anyone who knows us already knows, we didn't start this record label to get rich, we started Crybaby Records because we believe we can make a change.
As always, thank you for your support. We will be releasing a bunch of dates over the next few weeks, as well as a new season of BabyTalk Acoustic Sessions in May! In the meantime, send us a message and tell us what you think.
